Four Numbers Every Ottawa Guard Has to Hit
Guard height on a residential deck is 1,070 mm, which is 42 inches. A relaxation allows 900 mm, or 36 inches, while the walking surface is not more than 1.8 m above the finished ground, so the taller guard applies as soon as the deck clears that height. That is the honest reason a raised deck railing costs more than a ground-level one: it is a code threshold, not an upsell. Next, no opening anywhere in a required guard may allow a 100 mm sphere to pass through, and that applies to the stair rake exactly as it does to the level sections. It is the rule that sets baluster spacing, and it is why a preference for wider spacing cannot be accommodated. Then the stairs. More than three risers on an exterior stair means a handrail, mounted 865 mm to 965 mm above the stair nosing. And finally the one that catches good decks out: a wide flat guard cap is rarely graspable enough to serve as that handrail.
