Deck Building in Stittsville

Deck Builders Experts builds, replaces and repairs decks throughout Stittsville, at Ottawa’s west edge.

Stittsville has an old centre and a new perimeter. The historic Main Street area holds houses that have been standing a long time, while subdivisions on the outside have gone up quickly in recent years. Those two situations put almost opposite problems in front of a deck crew: unknown framing and awkward walls in one, and freshly disturbed ground in the other.

Old centre, new edges

Village Houses and Brand New Subdivisions

An older home near Main Street usually has history in its back wall. Additions, enclosed porches, changes of cladding and framing that does not match anything on a modern drawing. Before a ledger goes anywhere near a wall like that, we want to see what is behind it, because attaching a deck to framing that cannot carry it is the worst mistake available on this kind of job. Where the wall is not right, the answer is a freestanding frame carrying its own load on its own posts and beam, set clear of the house. On the new subdivisions the walls are predictable and the ground is not. Land that has been graded and sodded inside the last few years has fill over it, and fill is not what a footing bears on. Those two conditions are what separate a Stittsville quote from a generic one.

Season

Booking Around the Frost Calendar

Deck work in Ottawa is governed by a frost season that puts footing excavation and concrete on hold through the deep-freeze months. That is not a scheduling preference, it is a physical constraint, and it compresses the build season into the rest of the year. The practical consequence for a Stittsville homeowner is simple: a quote agreed over the winter is a quote for a spring build, and the earlier the conversation happens the more choice you have about where in the season your job lands. It also means the site visit is worth doing before the ground closes up. We can measure, price and plan a deck in cold weather perfectly well. What we will not do is put concrete in a hole that is not ready for it in order to hit a date.

Digging in Recently Graded Ground

What we do differently on a lot where the landscaping is newer than the house.

Dig through the fill, not into it

A footing has to bear on undisturbed ground. On a newly graded lot that means digging past the placed fill before we are anywhere near a bearing surface.

Depth stays at frost depth

Footings in Ottawa and eastern Ontario are commonly taken to about 1.5 m, deeper than the 1.2 m minimum common in southern Ontario. Loose fill on top does not count toward that.

Settlement under stair landings

Stairs landing on recently placed fill will move as it settles. We carry the landing on its own footing rather than resting it on grade and hoping.

Sonotube sized to the load

Typically 10 to 12 inches in diameter, with the flared base matched to what that post is carrying. Light loads take roughly a 10 inch base, heavy ones go much wider.

Sod and reinstatement agreed first

New sod around a footing line has to come up. We agree before we start whether it is lifted and relaid, replaced, or left for your landscaper.

The Stittsville Jobs That Come Up Most

What the mix of old centre and new subdivisions produces.

First deck on a new-build lot

Fresh sod, a rear door and nothing else. Footings dug through the fill to undisturbed ground, and a layout planned before the yard gets landscaped around it.

Freestanding decks for older homes

Where a rear wall will not take a ledger, a self-supporting frame on its own posts and beam does the job without touching the house structure.

Extending a builder deck

The small platform that came with the house, assessed and then widened, lowered into a second level, or given a proper stair run down to the yard.

Our Process

How We Run a Stittsville Build

1

Look at the house and the ground

Rear wall construction, threshold height, how recently the lot was graded, and setbacks.

2

Written quote and build slot

Price, scope and an honest position on where in the season the job can realistically start.

3

Permit where the height requires it

Over 600 mm above grade we prepare drawings and file with the City of Ottawa.

4

Footings first, then everything else

Dug past the fill to depth, poured, then frame, boards, guards and stairs.

We hired Deck Builders Experts to replace our old wooden deck. They explained our material options clearly and helped us choose a design that suited our home and budget. We are very happy with the result.

Stittsville Deck Questions

Our house is new and the yard was only graded last year. Can footings go in yet?

Yes, but the hole has to go through the placed fill and bear on undisturbed ground below it. Fill that was spread during landscaping will keep settling, and a footing resting in it will follow. We dig to frost depth, commonly about 1.5 m in this region, and confirm what we are bearing on before any concrete is placed.

We own an older home near Main Street. Can a deck attach to it?

Often, and sometimes not, which is why we look before promising. A ledger needs solid rim framing to bolt into and a clean route for flashing above it, so water is shed away from the wall rather than into it. Where the existing construction will not give us that, we build a freestanding frame on its own posts and beam. It costs a little more in footings and nothing at all in worry.

The builder left a small deck off our back door. Can it be extended?

Usually yes, once we have checked what it is standing on. If the existing footings are at depth and correctly placed, an extension can tie into the frame. If they are shallow, the honest answer is that the new section should carry itself on new footings, and often that it is worth rebuilding the whole thing at the same time rather than joining new work to something that will keep moving.

How early should we book for a spring build?

Earlier than most people expect. Footing excavation and concrete stop through the deep-freeze months, so the season is shorter than the calendar suggests and it fills from the front. A winter site visit and a signed written quote put you in the queue for spring rather than in the queue for a quote in spring.

Will you have to dig up our new sod?

Around the footing line and along the frame, yes. There is no way to put a footing in without disturbing what is over it. What we can control is how much and what happens afterwards, so we agree at the site visit whether the sod is lifted and relaid, replaced, or left to your landscaper, and that decision is written into the quote.
