Water Stops Beading Before the Deck Looks Bad
Pour a cup of water onto a board on the sunny side of your deck. If it sits up in beads, the finish is still shedding water and you have another season in it. If it darkens the wood and soaks in within a minute, the film is done, whatever the colour still looks like from the house. Most Ottawa wood decks want a coat every two to three years. A south or west-facing deck burns through sooner because it takes hours of direct afternoon sun plus the heat coming back off the boards, and a shaded north-facing deck stretches longer. Grey boards are not the first sign, they are a late one. Once the surface has gone silver the top layer of wood fibre has opened up, and that is the point where sanding stops being cosmetic and becomes structural prep.
